Due lezioni sulla storia della matematica araba (10-12 Marzo 2025, Università degli Studi di Firenze)

Equazioni nei testi arabi di matematica

Within the framework of the MA-course "Storia della matematica", Eleonora Sammarchi is invited to give two lectures on the history of mathematics in Arabic sources. The course is held by Prof. Dr. Veronica Gavagna at the Department of Mathematics "Ulisse Dini" (University of Florence). Lectures will take 9th- to 13th-century mathematical texts written in Arabic into account and focus on the question: "What are equations in algebraic texts of the Islamicate world?". Through the analysis and commentary on primary sources, students will acquire tools to develop a critical understanding of mathematical notions.

Seminario per insegnanti di matematica delle scuole medie secondarie (11 Marzo 2025, Università degli Studi di Firenze)

Il "calcolo indiano" ed altri calcoli insegnati nell'impero arabo-musulmano

Eleonora Sammarchi is invited to give a lecture in the Seminar for Italian high school teachers in mathematics. The seminar is organized by Prof. Veronica Gavagna at the Department of Mathematics "Ulisse Dini" (University of Florence). After a short introduction of mathematics in the Islamicate world, the lecture will focus on the heterogeneity of arithmetical approaches which characterized Arabic sources. Finally, a case study related to the so-called "Indian Arithmetic" will be examined.
